Southwood High School Graduate Returns Home To Give Back – Nextlavel

Shreveport, La. – A Southwood High School graduate went back to his roots on Friday with an inspiring message to students: “If I can do it, so can you.”

Robert Atkins is CEO of BALANCED Media | Technology, a video game and purpose-driven technology company based in McKinney, Texas. His visit to Southwood is part of a new after-school partnership he is promoting with BRF’s Digital Media Institute.

Atkins told the students that he grew up in extreme poverty and lived in the Cedar Grove neighborhood. He said that if it weren’t for Martha Boone, the assistant principal at Southwood High School, who advocated for him to enroll at LSU-Shreveport, he wouldn’t be who he is today.

“She changed my life,” Atkins told the congregation. “To help someone, often all you have to do is let them know there are options.”

Atkins told the students about the new, free afterschool program that teaches students the basic principles of computer animation and modeling. The program’s curriculum is created and staffed by DMI and funded by a grant from the Carolyn W. and Charles T. Beaird Family Foundation of Shreveport.

The afterschool program is being piloted at Southwood High School and will be offered to other local high schools in the coming months.
